Common Causes Of A Chronic Throat Problem

Heartburn has been linked with people experiencing a throat problem. Heartburn occurs when stomach acids back up into your esophagus, causing a painful burning feeling in your chest or throat. Experiencing heartburn at least twice a week, however, may indicate that a person has a gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Throat Problem And Its Connection With GERD

Like heartburn and acid regurgitation, the main cause of GERD is the movement of gastric content into the esophagus without vomiting. But while heartburn can be treated by taking antacids after meals and at bedtime, GERD may require various treatments such as anti-reflux therapy. This type of therapy involves medication, lifestyle modification and sometimes surgical operation.

The most common medication given to people with GERD is antacids. Doctors recommend more liquid antacids over the tablets, and it should be taken 30-40 minutes after meal and during bedtime. Patients complaining of a throat problem due to GERD may also undertake a change in their lifestyle, particularly with regard to their eating habits.

How To Prevent Throat Problem Through Lifestyle Modifications

Observing the following habits may help people treat their stomach acid problems and prevent chronic throat problem:

  • Eat a bland diet. Instead of eating three times a day, people with stomach acid problems may divide their meals into five or six small meals.
  • Avoid foods that stimulate the formation of acid. A few examples include gums, candy and lozenges.
  • Aim to lose weight. Obese people need to diet until they reach their ideal weight.
  • Practice abdominal breathing. Instead of expanding the chest, practice abdominal breathing by pushing out the stomach each breath.
  • Sleep with your hair raised. Use two to three pillows when sleeping, or add cinder blocks to increase the height of the bed from 4-11 inches.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes especially around the body’s midsection.
  • Avoid overstretching, over bending or stooping than necessary.
